CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

The last place Augusto had visited that looked anything like this apartment was his hotel room in Paris. Though he’d only stayed there three nights before having to fly home again, he remembered the plush fabrics and perfect lighting. The pictures in Alexander’s apartment were hung impersonally, not like the ones in the place he shared with Keith. Those were hung by himself, Keith and Donny. While Augusto looked around, he removed his tie and dropped it on one of the leather sofas as he slowly walked in.

Light bathed everything, glistening off things that seemed as though hadn’t been used in a while. He turned to see Alexander watching him intently. At the piano he lifted the lid and tapped his finger against one key, allowed the sound to resonate within him before moving his fingers to another key. Inhaling deeply, he closed the lid and continued his small tour of the vast room.

For some reason he thought back to what Alexander had said when he asked him to stay the night.

“I don’t mean to fuck or anything. I mean…just stay the night with me. Hang out. Talk. I’ll sleep on the couch if you want.”

He blushed and looked away. At the window, he pulled the curtain aside and stared out. They were high up. The ride in the elevator didn’t seem that long. That was probably because he couldn’t concentrate on anything but Alexander clutching his hand, making his heart race. Swallowing the lump in his throat, he turned and pressed his back to the cool window. “This is lovely.”

Alexander seemed nervous, almost as one would look on a first date.

Augusto smiled. “Can I get something to drink?” he asked, as a way to break the intensity in the air.

“Shit. Sorry,” Alex blurted, eyes widening as if he’d just now remembered to breathe. “I have bottled water. No sodas. Juice. I can make coffee.” He started toward the fridge. The room was wide open so Augusto could watch every step he took. “What would you like?”

Augusto shook his head. “I don’t really like coffee that much. I take a sip in the mornings but that’s about it.” He extended his hand to Alexander. “Come here.”

Reaching out, Alexander slowly stepped toward him again. Though there was still a lot of worry on his face, Alex’s expression softened slightly. He took Augusto’s hand.

Gently pulling Alexander closer, Augusto only stopped when Alexander rested into his body, pressing Augusto into the coolness of the glass. Augusto wrapped his arms around him, sliding one hand up Alex’s back and caressed the tender spot at his neck. The soft touch morphed slightly into a half-handed massage while his other hand remained against Alexander’s lower back.

Each breath Alexander breathed, Augusto felt against the sensitive skin of his neck and when a soft purr left Alexander’s lips, a smile stretched across Augusto’s face.

“I can’t believe I’m actually here right now,” Alexander whispered.

“Why not?” Augusto was shocked at the sound of his own voice. It was harsh, raspy to his own ears.
